Did you notice? John Jantsch is writing this week from Austin and I’m experiencing the same, broiling heat in Dallas. Folks here may live in 100 degree weather in the spring, but I can attest that it’s a shock to go from 65 degrees and scrumptious spring days to get off the airplane and step into this frying pan.
Here’s a great exercise for you the next time you are going through a busy airport or experiencing a lot of people that seem to be rushed, irritated or just worn out from too much heat. How would you feel about all of those people—hundreds of them, if they were your customers? Suppose you had a service or product that they all needed? And you know your service or solution would enable them to generate the wealth they desired, so they could be traveling to an exotic vacation destination instead of where they seem to be headed, instead?
We have that in the Duct Tape Marketing Coach camp and it makes every day terrific when you realize that it can bring excitement, energy and enthusiasm to even the most weary-looking or blank stare face. As I pass hundreds of faces, I look into each and wonder—are you my customer now or could you be my next, best customer?
How many of those faces belong to business owners with 50 employees or fewer? How many believe they are good at what they do but not very good at marketing? How many of them are association executives or sit on boards or committees of national associations—or state associations? How many of them have become certified in something or taken training courses to become certified? Those are all the people in our niche market in our business. Are they right here in front of me—right now?
Look at those people with wireless laptops and PDA's.Are they actively seeking the solutions and answers we provide and need to Google some key words to find us? How well is my website working, right now, to let them know they’ve found us! Look at those people with cell phones. Are they calling my toll free number and getting the answers they need? Is my customer care center taking care of them right now—as current or new customers of Duct Tape Marketing?
When everyone you meet is your customer or could be your customer—you smile a lot, no matter how hot and miserable things may seem around you.
